Post of the Month

Garrison Bain
Crossing Paths

1) Inspiration for post.
-I wanted to try my hand writing a big battle scene. It was something that I've always wanted to do, but really had no reason to, with this character. I really try to work on something different in each post (Battle, internal strife, dialect, third person, first person, etc.). I just figure that the more diverse I am the better writer I will become. I dunno…I hope it works.

2) Writing Philosophy. (Basically what you think makes a good story)
-A good story to me is something that really grabs your attention and compels you to read on. You can tell when you are writing well when the sentence you just wrote just seemed to belong…as if it almost wrote itself. In my case, I judge it a good story when I re-read my own work and want to finish it before I go back to make any spelling or grammatical changes.

3) What makes a great Hero?
-Virtues. A hero is somebody who does the right thing, consciously, even if he/she is a bad guy.

4) ... Villian?
-A great Villian is someone who does his or her work in a selfish and secretive way. While I can appreciate a bad guy that just wants to kill and rule the world, I can really get into a bad guy that goes about it by manipulation and subterfuge.

5)How do you get yourself in the mood to write?
-My mind is constantly swirling with ideas and things. Sometimes the ideas suddenly coalesce into something good for no reason at all. But most of the time I need to drive around with the radio off or possibly go to the WOT chat to talk with others. That usually works.

6) What authors influence your work?
-I've always thought of Edgar Rice Burroughs as a big influence to my work. He wrote the Tarzan books and bunch of others (my favorite are the Mars books). He wasn't a real deep writer but his sense of adventure was unmatched. Boy meets girl, boy looses girl, boy goes through hell to find girl, and everyone lives happily ever after…of course. Oh, and the main bad guy is either killed or gets real pissed…prompting the next story.

7) Which is the enemy of humankind? Smooth or Crunchy peanut butter? Why?
-Smooth. It's easier to spread, but there is something about the consistency that bugs me.

8) If a publisher came to you and wanted to publish something you wrote, what would you write about?
-I have a story line that I have been working on for years now. It's my own world with its own history and magic system. It's too detailed to get into here…but I will eventually give it a shot.

9) How do you overcome writer's block? (Some of us could use a few pointers)
-I usually have to step away for a few days to recharge. Sometimes, I read other posts from the site and that helps too. Other times, I just move on down and work on a different portion of the storyline and then come back to the 'stuck' part afterwards.

10) IF you could live in any time period which would it be?
-I can't imagine living in any other time period that this one. Unless I could pick a future time period…maybe. Otherwise I'll just stay right where I'm at.

11) Which is the better pratical joke, a whoopie cushion, a joy buzzer or a rubber chicken? Please explain.
-Whoopie cushion. Nothing is funnier that a good fart when you least expect it.

12) If you could co-author a novel with any author, who would it be?
-Hmmmm. Alive? Joel Rosenberg. I like the realism of his writing. Dead? Edgar Rice Burroughs. I like his adventure first, content second approach.

13) What was the greatest thing before sliced bread?
-That's easy…un-sliced bread. It's still nutritious and yummy, just without the convenience of crusty slices.

14) What music do you like to listen to while writing?
-I usually listen to Puddle of Mudd or Three Eleven. But most of the time I'm at work while I write on my posts…so I don't listen to music there.

15) What are you currently reading?
-Gosh, I wish! The last book I read was Crossroads of Twilight by Robert Jordan. I just don't have time to read anymore. Once my kids get a little older I will start up again...but not right now.
