Technology
A Quick Overview
The Age of Legends will later be best known for the wonders worked by
the One Power, saidin and saidar working together harmoniously. Reflecting
this harmony is the culture of the Age of Legends, a time of peace and
utopia. Within this Pre-Breaking society, which contained institutions of
higher learning such as in Collam Daam in addition to the desire to better
the condition of the general populace, a highly advanced technology would
have existed.
Transportation
Concerning the One Power, transportation was carried out using
Travelling, Skimming and portal stones. Portal stones, however, provided
less flexibilty in transportation having fixed origins and destinations.
Jo-car
Perhaps the most common form of transportation, the jo-car would have been
used for private, commercial, and military purposes. The vehicle could
either have been mounted on wheels or hovering slightly in the air, only
enough to avoid minor terrain obstacles. It is also reasonable to assume
that a complex and competent road system was developed in practically all
areas.
Sho-wing
Also used for both commercial and military use, the sho-wing is the most
common aircraft for the era. Used mostly for crossing impassable terrain or
for a quick direct route.
Hoverfly
Probably not used as much for transportation since it held a limited number
of passengers. Usually, only two people could board a hoverfly. Probably
acted as a support unit in the military. The name "hoverfly" suggested that
it had the ability to hover in place for an extended period of time. In
turn, it could probably preform deft maneuvers that a sho-wing could not,
most notably, fly backwards or any other direction. It also probably had an
insectoid appearance.
Other
Other highly advanced forms of travel existed. In the cities, public
transportation was provided in the form of a monorail system. Horses were
rarely used, except perhaps in the more rural areas. Ships also could
have been used, but also rarely. It is more likely that ships were for
transporting cargo rather than people. One of the cities (Comelle?) was a
major port city. It would be more cost-effective to have an Aes Sedai
make a gateway than hire a ship, however. Horses and ships may not have
been used for practical purposes, but it is possible that they were often
used for recreation purposes, especially ships that would have been used for
pleasure craft.
Weaponry
Violence was very rare in the Age of Legends until the Collapse.
There was a police force made up of men and Ogiers, much like the make-up of
the military, but until serious crimes began to plague the world, the forces
were mostly for decoration. With the appearance of crime and misconduct,
weapons and enforcement became more common in the Age of Legends.
Shocklance
The basic standard weapon of the era. It is a long range weapon firing
energy to disrupt the target. Logically, there are variants of the standard
weapon. It can be surmised that there were different types of shocklances
such as sniper shocklances, mounted heavy shocklances, hand-held
shocklances, etc. It is a precision weapon and assumingly powerful enough
to kill an unarmored person with one vital shot.
Artillery and other explosives
Seeing as there is an Illuminator's Guild in the Third Age, it is
probable that there was a more advanced form and use of explosive powder in
the Age of Legends. Explosives were probably discovered before the War of
Power and during the Breaking, probably lost to civilization save for the
Illuminator's Guild. Artllery would have been relied on heavily being the
heavy firepower necessary to destroy heavy armor, especially with armies
lacking Aes Sedai to provide other forms of destruction.
Other military technology
Radios and other communication devices were probably used. In an
advanced society such as the one presented in the Age of Legends, any
probable technology is permissable. Jo-cars, sho-wings, hoverflies, and the
other vehicles were definitely armored and put to military use. The
uniform of a common soldier consisted of a fan-cloth, helmet, and standard
shocklance. He would be fully armored in a way that, with the antennae in
his helmet, would lend the appearance of an insect. Swords were almost
never used. They were probably only used for military decoration for
high-ranking officers. There was, however, a revival of
the sport of swordfighting by Lews Therin and Be'lal a few years before the
War of Power. Also, during the Collapse, sha'je duels were held, violent
duels for sport using swords.
